Ágætis byrjun

So there are changes happening in my life. I don't know where they will lead me, but I still have my hopes. I just need to collect my thoughts and find my place. With so many musicians and so many opportunities around me, this place will, with time, become home for the next four years. Now that I'm here, I have a lot of work to do as I am nowhere near the best musician at the school. Doesn't hurt to dream, though.

Nearly all the kids here are against academics, but what can you expect, it's a music school! I, unlike the majority of the students here, actually enjoy math and science, and I do respect literature. I can get into the Museum of Fine Arts for free, Berklee has a library full of music, and the public library has practically everything. I love music, and music takes up a huge part of my life, but I cannot forget what else is out there.

The past two weeks have been pretty eventful, so I would like to write a post about an album, not a song. Hell, I'll even review the whole band if I have to, basically because they sum up my beliefs about music.

Sigur Rós

Responsible for some of the most soulful, emotionally powerful music I have ever listened to (aside from classical music). Everything about them screams music. They actually refused to play on the David Letterman show because they would rather not be restrained to 4 minutes, and they refused a couple million dollar deal to have a 15 SECOND CLIP put into a commercial. All for the quality and preservation of their music, which is indeed astounding.

I have finally gotten my hands on this album and I must say that it does not disappoint. Full of raw power and emotion, Icelandic band Sigur Rós provides a musical soundscape that allows one (at least me, anyways) a chance to get away from reality, to reflect on my life, and to basically imagine anything I possibly can. This is music that moves people, and although I can guarantee that there are plenty of people who will not understand the power of this album at all, if you let the music take a hold of you it is a truly magical experience. With Jonsi's haunting vocals, bowed guitars, strings and horns, as well as plenty of other musical goodies, this album is in my eyes a masterpiece - music for the soul. I believe that this is their best album by far, and I cannot wait for it to grow on me as the others have.

I am listening to this album for the first time right now and I am only about halfway through, but I will most likely make a more detailed review of this in the future.

-Rolling Stone rated this the 29th best album of the 2000's
-Pitchfork Media rated this the 8th best album of the 2000's

Anyways, I can't be sure how frequently I'll be posting. Most likely not everyday, but I'll see what the following week brings me. I wish the best to my friends and family, and I will be back soon.

-Will
